Ekta Taneja, MD
Harvard-trained, Board-certified Adult Psychiatrist
I provide compassionate, socioculturally informed, and personalized mental health care, including psychotherapy and medication management. I provide in-person appointments in Wellesley, MA, and virtual appointments for those who are located in Massachusetts.
Training Background
I attended medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where my participation in the Combined Accelerated Program in Psychiatry (CAPP) introduced me to my calling. During this time, I worked with our institution’s Program for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) team, caring for individuals with serious mental illness, meeting them in their homes and their communities to provide them with comprehensive mental health care.
I completed my adult psychiatry residency training at Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) / Harvard Medical School (HMS), where I received extensive training in psychopharmacology and numerous psychotherapy modalities, and also served as Chief Resident in community psychiatry. I stayed on at CHA as a staff psychiatrist in the Primary Care Behavioral Health Integration clinic, where I was an outpatient psychiatric consultant embedded in multiple primary care clinics within CHA. I supervised residents in this clinic, and was also the inaugural supervisor in the revived Healthcare for the Homeless resident psychiatry clinic, for several years.
Leading a Residency Program
I served as the Associate Training Director, and then the Interim Training Director, for the Cambridge Health Alliance / Harvard Medical School residency program, fostering residents’ growth across their full developmental trajectory. In these roles, I directed and supervised the training, supervision, and curriculum for 32 adult psychiatry residents across 4 years of training, in accordance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education and Harvard Medical School.
Clinical and Personal Expertise
In my clinical and academic work, I have specialized experience in areas related to racial and ethnic identity; sexual and gender identity; sociocultural issues, including immigration and stress from navigating cultures and cultural expectations; mood disorders like anxiety, depression, and panic disorders; trauma and grief; chronic pain and illness; women’s health; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); medical professionals’ mental health.
On a personal level, I am a child of immigrants and a person of color. I bring these identities into providing culturally informed care, with a collaborative and authentic approach. I have a deep appreciation for the complexities of human nature, and humility for all that we will learn in our work together.
Academic Expertise
I have extensive experience in administering workshops in areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including discussions of minority trainees’ perspectives on their own cultural identities in clinical and supervision settings; supporting a diverse trainee workforce; and faculty and trainee upstander training on how to step up when witnessing microaggressions. I have lectured on topics related to bias in psychiatric diagnosis; ADHD in primary care; race in supervision; mood disorders; among others. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I ran COVID-19 support and psychoeducation groups for frontline medical trainees experiencing stress, trauma, and grief.
